In September 1944, Army B officially became the 1st Army. It was strengthened by the merger with the Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI), officially decided by decree on 23 September 1942. It was nicknamed Rhine and Danube because of its victories on the Rhine and Danube between 31 March and 26 April 1945.
