Description
With *Lorenzaccio*, co-authored by Alfred de Musset and George Sand, David Bobée draws on a romantic Florentine fable to examine the contemporary world.
But in his own way—with a cast spanning generations, timeless costumes, and a massive set opening onto the city, a metaphor for the public sphere. A grand, sumptuous, masterful production—and just as accessible to the general public as he likes to emphasize.
Blending contemporary writing with reimagined classics, David Bobée’s productions hit the mark every time, as his personal and aesthetically distinctive interpretations of *Peer Gynt*, *Hamlet*, *Romeo and Juliet*, *Lucrezia Borgia*, and, most recently, *Don Juan* are unforgettable. His new production, *Lorenzaccio*, once again allows him to offer a shared experience centered on a masterpiece of the repertoire in a brand-new adaptation. The quintessence of Romanticism, the play explores violence, tyranny, and the duty to resist through a single character (Lorenzaccio) and the collective (the people). Highly political, it gives him the opportunity to invent his own language—visual, scenic, and scenographic—by confronting the text with our present while preserving the beauty of the tale and its theatricality. A challenge in itself when one considers the play’s structure—comprising thirty-nine scenes spread across twenty-five locations from Florence to Venice—and the nonstop succession of different situations! A powerful work that must be seen without delay.
